How does Fitzgerald paint Nick as the narrator?

Fitzgerald gives Nick the quality of being respectful, respectful for those who are not had the privileges that Nick has been given. He learns to be respectful from his father who turns his mind ever since giving the advice to not criticize others. Fitzgerald paints him as a likeable and understanding character with much intelligence and perspective of others. When introducing the narrator, Fitzgerald chooses Nick to be a positive and non judgemental to other races and social classes as opposed to Daisy or Tom who despise other races who are not white. An example of Fitzgerald using language features to describe Nick’s qualities is in the passage “When I came back from the East last autumn, I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever.” This means that after visiting the East Egg which is old money, he felt he wanted the world to all be the same and be concerned with the rights and privileges of others forever. This is obviously an outstretched exaggeration because this will never happen and therefore a hyperbole has been used. Another language feature Fitzgerald uses to show Nick’s quality is in the passage “If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life, as if he were related to one of those intricate machines that register earthquakes”. He is implying that Gatsby’s personality is an unflawed and unbreakable machine, a very bright and positive perspective on Gatsby rather than the truth that he has lied his entire life. Nick is using a simile to compare Gatsby to a seismograph, which perfectly gestures the movements around him, when in reality his series of gestures does eventually break and he is not as perfect as he seems.
