Significant Connections Plan

Aspect to CHARACTER: People prefer to live their life as someone else , an illusion, rather than the truth of themselves, their reality.

Chosen Text How does this text show illusion? Where is the evidence for this? Explain how this displays illusion?
Text 1 : The Great Gatsby The text shows illusion in that Jay Gatsby represents how illusion is applied to a person, in that his life is a fake persona. James Gatz—that was really, or at least legally, his name.” James Gatz—that was really, or at least legally, his name. He had changed it at the age of seventeen and at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career—when he saw Dan Cody’s yacht drop anchor over the most insidious flat on Lake Superior.”

This quote displays illusion in that James Gatz created his fake persona “Jay Gatsby” at the age of seventeen in order to change his undesired life into one which he can live with Daisy- an illusion. It is ironic because he met Dan Cody at Lake superior in order to start this dream(illusion) to become superior (by illegally making money)

This quote shows that Gatsby’s illusion is one  he made himself believe, the illusion that the characters can erase the past 5 years when Tom and Daisy got married so that he and Daisy can be together.

Text 2: The Dollshouse The text shows illusion in that Kezia tries to hide the fact that she empathises with the Kelveys because of her social status as part of an upper class family. “You can come and see our doll’s house if you want to,” said Kezia, and she dragged one toe on the ground.”

“Wicked, disobedient little girl!” said Aunt Beryl bitterly to Kezia”

In quote one Kezia, by asking the Kelveys to come see the dollhouse, breaks her upper class illusion and this barrier stopping him from nicely communicating with the Kelveys. You can tell she feels hesitant about breaking this illusion because she drags one toe on the ground as a nervous mannerism alongside this action.

In quote two once Kezia strays away from her illusion she is immediately insulted by Aunt Beryl forcing her to live this illusion that she despises the lower class when in reality she actually empathises with them and wants them to feel included.

Text 3: Spiderman Homecoming

This visual text shows that Peter Parker, an adolescent gifted with the powers to behave like a spider.

This film focuses on him trying to balance this new found lifestyle along with his normal high school life the latter of which he much rather prefers. This Spiderman persona is merely just an illusion he creates himself to help with his reality that he is a “loser”, unpopular and a “nerd”.

Peter Parker: But I’m nothing without this suit!

Tony Stark: If you’re nothing without this suit, then you shouldn’t have it.”

PETER: ‘LOOK, I’M JUST GONNA BE MYSELF.’

NED: ‘PETER, NO ONE WANTS THAT.’

This quote shows that both Leslie and Jesse have an illusion that they hold power in this make believe land when in reality they are very low classed and powerless against bullies such as Janice, they create this character that holds power over an entire land because they despise they’re true powerless personas in their true reality.

This quote states his desire to go to this party with this spider man persona which gives him confidence and then he is shut down when his friend Ned says nobody wants him to be his true nerdy self, encouraging him to rely on spiderman rather then living his reality. This is the basis for many superheroes who feel powerful when in costume but in reality are just ordinary people.

Text 4: The Yellow Wall-Paper This text shows illusion in that the yellow wallpaper is merely a trick of the woman’s head and that the stuff she is seeing in the yellow wallpaper isn’t real.

This short story shows just the extremes that psychosis can affect through first person of this character’s psyche.

“I don’t like to look out of the windows even- there are so many of those creeping women, and they creep so fast. I wonder if they all come out of that

wall- paper as I did? “

“For outside you have to creep on the ground, and everything is green instead of yellow. “

The women seems so stuck in this room that she feels she is one of the women in the wall and in her mind these women can escape into the street. She longs to escape this dreadful room that she has been trapped in by John and therefore creates herself an illusion that she is one of these women in the yellow wallpaper who can travel outside of this room.

The women now believes that she would rather be a part of these women in the wallpaper than outside in society where everything feels green. She is now stuck in her own illusion that inside this room is better than being outside and locks herself inside the room, this point being the peak of her insanity.
